romney and ryan were in this thing together. well, they're not. romney is dying. he can't stand being tied to ryan, and all that budget cutting baggage of his. for his part, ryan is feeling the taint of having a running mate who is unwilling to stand with him, unwilling to be his kind of politician. a conviction politician. so trouble in paradise. mitt's dying to be single again, so is ryan. we all know that politics makes strange bedfellows but the word is out this pair, romney and ryan, are sleeping in separate rooms. i'm joined by msnbc political analyst howard fineman and joy ann reid, managing editor of thegrio.com. more polling data that shows mitt romney trailing. let's check the hardball scoring board. according to a new fox news poll, president obama leads romney by five points among likely voters nationwide. 48% to 43%. catch that, the fox poll. highly significant there. let's go right now to howard on this question. it looks to me like this divorce papers are pretty much out there right now. all that you hear now is r

mitt romney's had a lot of debates. he went through a long primary practice where he got beat up a lot and got to beat up other people. barack obama had no primary process and has not been in a debate since his debates in the last election. so i think he's got -- he's not in fighting shape is my guess and all these practices he's doing, are to get him in the fighting shape. hopefully they have enough time to do it and hopefully he has a sparring opponent in john kerry who is not pulling any punches, not being as respectful to him as his staff might be and showing him that mitt romney is going to get on the stage knowing this is probably his last chance and he's going to be very aggressive in taking on obama. >> steve, thank you very much for your time. >> good to be here. >> steve, what do you think about this idea that debates don't usually change the race entirely all by themselves, but they confirm the narrative that has already been going on in the country? >> well, they can confirm the narrative but we keep coming

romney. gop nevada governor says about romney's 47% comment, quote, i don't agree with it. there's a lot of folks that i'm working extremely hard to get them unemployment and until they are employed, there are many services that are going to be needed. this is senator sandoval, a republican. people are understanding even in his own party how devastating this 47% tape you surfaced is and the president has it on an ad. >> people who conduct focus groups tell me that independent voters learned very quickly on their own about the 47% remark and focus groups said they brought it up on their own without being prompted and many have said that's reason enough for them to no longer consider voting for mitt romney and even some republicans in the margin have had similar reactions. looking at what the romney campaign has done the last few days and that ad they put out yesterday or the day before in which romney says, you know, the president is a good guy that cares about the poor and middle class, just
